These Customer Stories Remind Me Why I Wanted to Create MATT™

Two recent customer stories made me smile. Not only because their cats’ reactions were surprising, but because they confirmed exactly what I had hoped for when creating our baskets.

Lauren recently wrote to me after receiving hers:

“My order arrived a couple hours ago and my cat got off ‘his’ pillow and onto the MATT bed before I could even assemble it. I had to move him to put it together and he immediately got in, flopped down, and went to sleep. He has NEVER responded this enthusiastically to anything else we’ve bought him to use. I am shocked!!”

Her message immediately reminded me of a story shared on Reddit by Viola’s owner:

“Our cat Viola has never liked plush surfaces. We left a PC Express bag out on the floor of our hallway for months just because she liked to lie on it.”

She continued:

“Viola loves it because it’s not too cushiony, but has a cozy shape… I love it so much I bought a second to replace a tote bag she loves in my closet. I just swapped them out this time and she hopped in right away.”

And this last part made me laugh:

“I plan on buying a third so my husband can get his laptop bag back.”

I love receiving stories like these because they speak directly to one of the reasons I wanted to create these baskets in the first place.

We often assume that a cat bed needs to be very soft and plush to be comfortable. Yet many cats seem to prefer boxes, bags and firmer surfaces. A stable base can give them greater control over their position, while raised edges give them something to lean against, curl into and feel protected by.

That was also part of what attracted me to wool felt: a dense, structured, warm and natural material that feels very different from a soft cushion or synthetic textile.

Of course, every cat is different. But when the same kinds of stories begin to repeat themselves, I find it fascinating.

More than anything, they remind me why I wanted to create MATT™ in the first place: to observe animals, simplify the object, choose better materials and design something that responds more naturally to their behaviours.

Please keep sending me your stories. It is genuinely one of my favourite parts of MATT™.
