Every cat owner has experienced this.
You carefully choose a new bed for your companion. You bring it home excitedly, unpack it...
…and within seconds, your cat is comfortably settled inside the cardboard box instead of the brand-new bed you just bought.
This happens so often that it has become a running joke among cat lovers.
But behind this familiar scene lies a fascinating question.
Why does a simple cardboard box sometimes seem more appealing than a soft, cushioned cat bed?
The answer is far more complex than it might seem.
And it's precisely this question that inspired the very first MATT™ product.
Cats instinctively seek a sense of security
Even though our homes are safe environments today, cats still retain the instincts of their wild ancestors.
Choosing a place to rest is never a random decision.
Instinctively, cats look for a place where they can relax while remaining aware of their surroundings.
Without even thinking about it, they seek a space that allows them to:
- observe what's happening around them;
- limit the directions from which a potential threat could approach;
- retain their body heat;
- feel enclosed without being completely confined.
A simple cardboard box meets these needs surprisingly well.
Its walls create reassuring physical boundaries.
Its corners provide natural support for the body.
Its defined space creates the feeling of a safe retreat.
To us, it's just a box.
To a cat, it's a place where it feels protected.
Why do cats sleep curled up?
Watch your cat while it sleeps.
Most of the time, it doesn't stretch out completely.
It curls up.
This position helps conserve body heat, protects the most vulnerable parts of the body, and creates a natural sense of comfort.
That's why an oversized bed isn't always the best choice.
Contrary to what many people assume, most cats prefer a space that supports their natural resting posture rather than a large, completely open surface.
They enjoy feeling the edges around them.
They like having something to lean against.
They naturally seek that cozy, cocoon-like feeling.
Cats don't just choose a space—they choose a material
This is perhaps one of the most fascinating aspects of feline behavior.
Cats seem naturally drawn to materials that respond to their movements.
Cardboard gives slightly beneath their paws.
A blanket shifts and folds.
A sofa responds to their claws.
These subtle interactions create a much richer sensory experience than a perfectly rigid surface.
The material itself becomes part of the experience.
Almost like a form of play.
This may also explain why many cats ignore rigid synthetic pet beds in favor of a simple blanket, a couch... or even a cardboard box.
Why are cats so attracted to wool?
Wool has several qualities that cats seem to recognize instinctively.
Its warmth.
Its texture.
Its natural scent.
Unlike many synthetic materials, wool is a renewable animal fiber obtained from sheep during their regular shearing.
It retains a living texture that very few artificial materials can truly replicate.
To many cats, this material simply feels familiar.
Comforting.
Natural.
Although no scientific study can fully explain this attraction, countless cat owners observe this behavior every day.
Observing before designing
When we began designing the MATT™ Basket, our goal wasn't to create another pet bed.
Our first objective was to answer a question.
Why do cats love boxes so much?
That simple question became the starting point of the entire project.
We set out to recreate the qualities that make these spaces so appealing.
Edges that provide a sense of security.
Gently rounded corners where the body can naturally settle.
A warm material.
A living texture.
An object designed to support a cat's natural instincts instead of trying to change them.
The result isn't a basket inspired by a box.
It's an object inspired by the behavior of cats.
What a simple cardboard box can teach us
Cats aren't looking for the most sophisticated product.
They're looking for the one that best responds to their instincts.
Observing these behaviors reminds us of something essential.
Good design doesn't begin with drawing.
It begins with understanding.

What inspired MATT™
Every MATT™ product begins with a question.
For our signature basket, that question was remarkably simple:
Why do cats love boxes so much?
Rather than designing just another pet bed, we wanted to recreate the sensations that cats instinctively seek.
Reassuring edges.
Gently rounded corners where they can comfortably curl up.
A natural, warm and living material.
An object beautiful enough to blend seamlessly into the home, but above all thoughtfully designed to respect their natural behaviors.
Instead of asking animals to adapt to our design, we chose to let their instincts guide ours.
